3 Foundations for January

Are you feeling fully refreshed and ready to go into 2020 and achieve your goals? Do you feel like you have your plan and your intention set in a way that are going to help you to get the results that you want?

Hi, this is Grant Herbert, International Influencer and Sustainable Performance Coach, and I want to kick off 2020 by giving you a message and some tips around 3 things that you can do to make sure that your January sets you up for success throughout 2020.

So, happy New Year to all of you. Welcome to a new year, a new decade. I'm still in a little bit in holiday mode, although the office opens again today. I've got my Christmas period beard going on. I'm not sure how long that will stay. However, I wanted to make sure that I gave you what I could today to help you to get started fast.

So, let's take a look at what people like you and I can do to hinder what it is that we want to do in 2020.

We can take the process that we went through in December of reflection and we can use it in a negative way as we go into the new year. We can look at the things that we got wrong in 2019 and they become an anchor and stop us from going forward. We can have a look at all those things that we became that we're not happy with and we can allow those to form beliefs about ourselves, which are not going to service and are going to hold us back.

But, I want to take you through 3 things that you and I can do in January while everybody else is still getting started again, having a think about whether or not I'll set some goals. Well, we're going to hit the ground running and do 3 things to set us up for success.

When I say the word success, that means something totally different to you than it does to me. And, to be honest, even I feel it's a word that I use too often. What is success?

So, I think the first step is let's work out what success is for you before we go through this process...

But now, having done that, getting ready to propel ourselves into 2020, let's take a look at these 3 things.

The first thing that we all can do as we start January is UNPACK.

I go on a lot of travel and, over the years, I've learned to pack well. I can go and do an engagement in Dubai with carry on. So, that allows me to be more efficient.

However, it wasn't always that way. I would always take as much as I could, just in case.

I'd be carrying baggage that I didn't need to carry, and it would hold me back, and it would make me less efficient, less productive.

And that's what we can do with the baggage from 2019. We can carry it and it will hinder our progress in 2020. So, the first thing that we need to do is get those bags out, open them up, and UNPACK.

Take stuff out and discard it. Things that we don't need to take with us. Things that we don't need on the journey that we're going forward into.

Some of those things can be things like unhealthy beliefs that we've formed about ourselves, about our abilities, and capabilities, based on the things that we did or didn't do in 2019.

So, we need to grab those and unpack them. They could be in our business, in our plans. They could be things that we thought might be a good idea that we could do that really aren't part of the overall plan.

So, when we did that realignment process, there would have been certain events, tasks, projects that didn't fit. So we need to reach in the bag, unpack those, and throw them out. We don't need those going into 2020.

So, what is it that you need to unpack? It could be a relationship that you've formed that's become unhealthy. It could be a toxic behaviour that you're continuing to use. It could be a thought pattern.

Whatever it is, reach into the bag right now, grab hold of it, and throw it out. You don't need it. Unpack the unhealthy beliefs and behaviours from 2019. It's time to let them go.

Number 2 is UNPLUG.

Now, I'm not just talking about what some people do in January or different parts of the year. They're unplugged from social media or whatever. That could be part of it.

Last year, we had an issue with our electrics in our house and there was an appliance that tripped our meter and it kept tripping it. So, one of the things that I was told to do was go around and not just turn every switch off in the house, but unplug every single item from the power point.

And the reason for that is there's some residual connection, some residual power in those appliances that still could trip the circuit breaker if it was still plugged into the wall.

So, one of the things that we can do in January is we can unplug from some of those unhealthy situations, relationships.

Unplug from looking at things on social media that make us compare ourselves to others, that give us evidence that we're not doing so well, or whatever it is. We need to unplug from that.

We need to unplug ourselves from situations, from behaviours, at the source. So, unplugging from anything that's going to distract us from our purpose, that's going to hold us back from moving forward. So, let's unplug.

The third thing that we're going to do in January is we're going to UNLEARN.

The brain is an amazing thing. It takes on information and it stores it and it forms patterns. And we understand from my studies in neuroscience that neuro-plasticity allows us to rebuild those neural pathways. However, it's a process. It's a process of replacing the pathways that we currently have that determine our behaviour, where we can go from this initial thought to a learned behaviour in 1/250 thousandths of a second.

So, before we can rebuild our neural pathways and have more healthy pathways to enable us to do what it is that we need to do, to be who we need to be so that we can achieve 2020 results, is we need to UNLEARN.

We need to take those beliefs, those thoughts, those ideas, that information that we've taken on as being true, and we need to reject it. We need to unlearn it.

We need to go, "You know what, that's not serving me. That's not the right information based on the evidence that I've got."

That could be things that have been spoken into your life. That could be things that you've believed about yourself. That could be the meanings that you put on things based on events that happened in 2019. That small voice that wants to keep you safe, that wants to pull you back.

We need to help it to understand that that information is not true, that the evidence doesn't bear up, that we're not going to believe in that. We're going to leave that behind. So, the third thing we need to do is unlearn.

So, that's it. That's the three things that we're going to do in January. We're going to unpack, we're going to unplug, and we're going to unlearn.
